  Hello students of class 9. Welcome to Learn with Imran.This  post is for the students of class 9 of new curriculum. In this post, I will discuss and solve Activity: 1.3.3, of Experience-1, Opinion Matters.There are two texts in this activity. In this post I will discuss about the text-2, which is about Theodore Roosevelt, the American Nobel laureate author.Let's dive into it.

 

1.3.3 Read the following texts. Then,  discuss in  pairs/groups to identify the facts and opinions in the texts. Afterwards, write down the strategies you used to distinguish between facts and opinions. Finally, express how the writer’s opinions influenc your thoughts and opinions about the topics.
  (নিচের texts গুলো পড়ো। তারপর জোড়ায় জোড়ায় বা দলে আলোচনা করে ঘটনা (facts) এবং মতামত (opinions) চিহ্নিত করো।এরপর facts এব opinions  আলাদা করে চেনার কৌশলগুলো লেখো। সবশেষে আলোচ্য বিষয় সম্পর্কে তোমার মতামতকে লেখকের মতামত কীভাবে প্রভাবিত করেছে তা প্রকাশ করো।)

Theodore Roosevelt is best known as the twenty sixth President of the United States, but this dynamic, multi-talented, charismatic man became a hero to millions of Americans for many other reasons.

থিওডোর রোজাভেল্ট মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ছাব্বিশতম রাষ্ট্রপতি হিসাবে সর্বাধিক পরিচিত, তবে এই প্রগতিশীল, বহুমুখী প্রতিভাসম্পন্ন ও সহজাত দক্ষতা সম্পন্ন মানুষটি আরও অনেক কারণে লক্ষ-লক্ষ আমেরিকানদের কাছে আদর্শ ছিলেন।

 

Unwilling to travel to Stockholm, after two nearly fatal plane crashes, Hemingway asked John C. Cabot, the United States Ambassador to Sweden at the time, to read his acceptance speech. This acceptance speech is considered one of the best ever. This is what he wrote -

থিওডোর রোজাভেল্ট প্যারিসের সোরবান-এ ২৩ এপ্রিল, ১৯১০-এ তার "Citizenship in a Republic Speech" বক্তব্য টি দিয়েছিলেন। বক্তব্য টি জনগণের প্রতি রাষ্ট্রের এবং রাষ্ট্রের প্রতি জনগণের কর্তব্য এবং দায়িত্ব নিয়ে রোজাভেল্ট-এর চিন্তাধারার জন্য প্রশংসিত হয়েছিল।বক্তৃতাটি বৃথা সমালোচনা, অলসতা এবং নিষ্ক্রিয় না থেকে কাজের প্রতি গুরুত্ব এবং জীবনের মূল্যবান লক্ষ্যগুলির দিকে প্রচেষ্টা দেবার উপর গুরুত্ব আরোপ করে। 

 

A country’s success, Roosevelt stated, depends on disciplined work and character, and democracies require leaders of the best character to hold all citizens to the highest standards. This is what he said:

রোজাভেল্ট বলেন, একটি দেশের সাফল্য নির্ভর করে সুশৃঙ্খল কাজ এবং চরিত্রের ওপর, এবং গণতন্ত্রে সকল নাগরিকদেরকে সর্বোচ্চ মান ধরে রাখার জন্য সর্বোত্তম চরিত্রের নেতাদের প্রয়োজন। তিনি বলেন: 

 

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, and comes short again and again because there is no effort without error and shortcoming;

সমালোচককে মূল্য দেয়া হয় না, ঐ লোকটিরও কোনো কৃতিত্ব নেই যে সামর্থবান লোকটি কীভাবে হোঁচট খেয়ে পড়ে গেল সেটি চিহ্নিত করে বা এটা বলে দেয় যে কীভাবে করলে কাজটি আরো ভালোভাবে করা যেত।।কৃতিত্বটি সেই লোকেরই যিনি আসলে মাঠে-ময়দানে লড়াই করছেন, যার মুখে ধুলো-ঘাম এবং রক্ত মেখে আছে; যে বীরত্বের সাথে সংগ্রাম করে যায়; যে ভুল করে, এবং বারবার লক্ষ্য অর্জনে ব্যর্থ হয় কারণ এমন কোনো প্রচেষ্টা নেই যেখানে ভুল ও ঘাটতি থাকে না; 

 

but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”

কিন্তু যিনি প্রকৃতপক্ষে কাজ করার জন্য প্রচেষ্টা করেন; যার ভেতর বিশাল উদ্দীপনা আছে, নিষ্ঠা আছে; যিনি নিজের সময়কে একটি যোগ্য/মহৎ উদ্দেশ্যে ব্যয় করেন; যিনি সবচেয়ে ভাল জানেন, সব শেষে, সবচেয়ে ভালো কিছু অর্জন করেন, এবং যিনি সবচেয়ে খারাপ সময়ে, যদি তিনি ব্যর্থ হন, অন্ততপক্ষে সাহসিকতার সাথে লড়াই করে ব্যর্থ হন, যাতে তার স্থান কখনই সেই নিষ্ক্রিয় এবং ভীরু মানুষদের সারিতে রাখা না হয়, যারা না জানে বিজয় না জানে পরাজয়।

4.   Theodore Roosevelt gave his “Citizenship in a Republic Speech” on April 23,   1910, at the Sorbonne in Paris	Democracies   require leaders of the best character to hold all citizens to the highest   standards.	The   use of words like "require" indicates a subjective viewpoint,   suggesting an opinion.	The   writer's opinion helped me shaping my view on leadership.
5.   Theodore Roosevelt is best known as the twenty sixth President of the United   States.	The   speech emphasizes the importance of action and striving towards worthy goals   in life over idle criticism, laziness, and inaction.	The use of words and phrases like ‘emphasizes’ and ‘importance of action’ makes it an opinion.	The   writer's opinion encourages me to value action and pursuit of worthy goals   over criticism and inaction.
6.   Roosevelt’s speech emphasizes the importance of disciplined work and   character for a country’s success. |	It   is not the critic who counts; the credit belongs to the man who is actually   in the arena.	The   phrases "the credit belongs" and "it is not the critic who   counts" express a subjective perspective, making it an opinion.	The   writer's opinion motivates me to focus on active participation and effort   rather than being a passive critic.
