The 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to the American author Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961) for his mastery of the art of narrative, demonstrated in ‘The Old Man and the Sea’, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style.
মার্কিন লেখক আর্নেস্ট হেমিংওয়েকে (১৮৯৯-১৯৬১) "দ্য ওল্ড ম্যান অ্যান্ড দ্য সি”-তে বর্ণনাশৈলিতে দক্ষতা প্রদর্শনের জন্য এবং সমসাময়িক লেখার ধরণে তিনি যে প্রভাব ফেলেছেন তার জন্য তাকে ১৯৫৪ সালে সাহিত্যে নোবেল পুরস্কার দেয়া হয়েছিল।
Unwilling to travel to Stockholm, after two nearly fatal plane crashes, Hemingway asked John C. Cabot, the United States Ambassador to Sweden at the time, to read his acceptance speech. This acceptance speech is considered one of the best ever. This is what he wrote -
দুটি প্রায় মারাত্মক বিমান দুর্ঘটনার পর স্টকহোমে ভ্রমণ করতে অনিচ্ছা প্রকাশ করে, হেমিংওয়ে সুইডেনে নিযুক্ত মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের রাষ্ট্রদূত জন সি. ক্যাবটকে তার স্বীকৃতি বক্তৃতা পাঠ করতে বলেছিলেন। এই বক্তৃতাটি সর্বকালের অন্যতম সেরা একটি বক্তৃতা হিসাবে বিবেচিত। তিনি লিখেছেন -
“Having no facility for speech-making and no command of oratory nor any domination of rhetoric, I wish to thank the administrators of the generosity of Alfred Nobel for this Prize.
বক্তৃতা দেবার জন্য কোন দক্ষতা নেই এবং অতিরঞ্জিতমূলক ভাষায় কিংবা বক্তৃতা অলংকৃত করে বলার কোন আধিপত্য/যাদুমন্ত্র নেই, আমি এই পুরস্কারের জন্য আলফ্রেড নোবেলের উদারতার জন্য কর্তৃপক্ষকে ধন্যবাদ জানাতে চাই।
No writer who knows the great writers who did not receive the Prize can accept it other than with humility. There is no need to list these writers. Everyone here may make his own list according to his knowledge and his conscience.
পুরষ্কার পাননি এমন বিশিষ্ট লেখকদের চেনেন এমন কোন লেখক নম্রতা ছাড়া আর কোনোভাবে সেটি গ্রহণ করতে পারেন না। এই লেখকদের তালিকা দেবার প্রয়োজন নেই। এখানের প্রত্যেকে নিজ জ্ঞানে এবং বিবেক অনুযায়ী তাদের নিজস্ব তালিকা তৈরি করতে পারেন।
It would be impossible for me to ask the Ambassador of my country to read a speech in which a writer said all of the things which are in his heart. Things may not be immediately discernible in what a man writes, and in this sometimes he is fortunate, but eventually, they are quite clear and by these and the degree of alchemy that he possesses he will endure or be forgotten.
আমার দেশের রাষ্ট্রদূতকে এমন একটি ভাষণ পড়তে বলা আমার পক্ষে অসম্ভব হবে যেখানে একজন লেখক তার হৃদয়ের সমস্ত কথা বলেছেন। একজন মানুষ যা লেখেন তাতে বিষয়গুলি সাথে-সাথে বোঝা যায় না বা প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয় না, এবং এতে কখনও-কখনও সে সৌভাগ্যবান হতে পারে, কিন্তু অবশেষে, সেগুলি বেশ স্পষ্ট হয়ে উঠে, এবং এগুলি অর্থাৎ তার কাজের রহস্যময় গুণগুলি, সে যতটুকুর অধিকারী তার স্থায়িতা সে ভোগ করবে বা ভুলে যাবে।
Writing, at its best, is a lonely life. Organizations for writers palliate the writer’s loneliness but I doubt if they improve his writing. He grows in public stature as he sheds his loneliness and often his work deteriorates. For he does his work alone and if he is a good enough writer he must face eternity, or the lack of it, each day.
লেখালেখি, যখন চূড়ান্ত পর্যায়ে যায়, জীবন তখন নিঃসঙ্গ। লেখকদের সংগঠনগুলি লেখকের একাকীত্বকে সারিয়ে তোলে, তবে আমার সন্দেহ আছে যে তারা (লেখকদের সংগঠনগুলি) লেখকের লেখার কোন উন্নতি করে কিনা। তিনি (লেখক) জনসাধারণের প্রভাবে বেড়ে ওঠেন যাতে তিনি তার একাকীত্ব লাঘব করতে পারেন এবং এতে প্রায়ই তার (লেখকের) কাজের অবনতি ঘটে। যেহেতু তিনি একাই তার কাজ করেন এবং যদি তিনি যথেষ্ট ভাল লেখক হন তবে তিনি আবশ্যই অমরত্ব পাবে অথবা প্রত্যেক দিন এর (eternity) অভাবের মুখোমুখি হতে হবে।
For a true writer, each book should be a new beginning where he tries again for something that is beyond attainment. He should always try for something that has never been done or that others have tried and failed. Then sometimes, with great luck, he will succeed.
একজন সত্যিকারের লেখকের জন্য, প্রতিটি বই একটি নতুন সূচনা হওয়া উচিত যেখানে সে এমন কিছুর জন্য আবার চেষ্টা করে যা তার সাফল্যের বাইরে। তাকে সবসময় এমন কিছু করার চেষ্টা করা উচিত যা কখনও করা হয়নি বা অন্যরা চেষ্টা করেছে এবং ব্যর্থ হয়েছে। তারপর কখনও কখনও, বিরাট ভাগ্যের কারণে তিনি সফল হন।
How simple the writing of literature would be if it were only necessary to write in another way what has been well written. It is because we have had such great writers in the past that a writer is driven far out past where he can go, out to where no one can help him.
সাহিত্যে রচনা কতটা সহজ হতো যদি যা কিছু সুন্দরভাবে লেখা হয়েছে এমনকিছু অন্যভাবে লেখার প্রয়োজন হতো। এটির কারণ অতীতে আমাদের অনেক বড় মাপের লেখক ছিলেন যে একজন লেখককে অনেক দূর তাড়িত করা হতো যেখানে সে যেতে পারতো এবং তাকে সাহায্য করার মত কেউ ছিল না।
I have spoken too long for a writer. A writer should write what he has to say and not speak it. Again, I thank you.”
